Our Commitment for a sustainable future in Switzerland and beyond

Share

As the world’s largest, most broadly based healthcare company, we know that human health is inextricably linked to the health of the planet—healthy people need a healthy planet. Our Credo, written in 1943, and our aspiration of advancing health for everyone, everywhere, are at the heart of our commitment to environmental stewardship.

Our Credo, clearly states “We must maintain in good order the property we are privileged to use, protecting the environment and natural resources”. Therefore, we recognize our responsibility in helping to conserve and protect natural resources while being committed in playing a role to help reaching the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.

At Johnson & Johnson, we are committed to marshaling our expertise, resources and partnerships to reduce the environmental footprint of our operations, our products and our extended supply chain while delivering better health for all. We have a longstanding commitment to environmental health, including two decades of public climate commitments. Building on our strong legacy of climate action, in September 2020 we announced Johnson & Johnson’s next generation of climate goals:

  • By 2025, source 100% of our electricity needs from renewable sources
  • By 2030, achieve carbon neutrality for our operations, going beyond our Science-Based Target to reduce absolute Scope 1 and 2 emissions 60% from 2016 levels
  • By 2030, reduce absolute upstream Scope 3 emissions 20% from 2016 levels

These new climate goals build on the legacy and achievement of our previous efforts, while accelerating action as part of the larger movement by the private sector, along with governments and civil society, to ramp up the ambition and implementation of climate goals during this new UN Decade of Action.

We believe industry has an important role to play in responding to climate change, and we have been recognized as a leader in environmental sustainability.

In 2020, J&J was named as a global corporate leader in climate action and water security by receiving two ‘A-List’ ratings from the CDP. This is the third year in a row J&J has secured a place on this prestigious ‘A-List’ for tackling climate change, and the second year in a row we have been recognized for our work in water security. In addition, for the fourth year in a row J&J has been awarded a position on the CDP ‘Supplier Engagement Rating Leaderboard’, for our work with suppliers to measure and manage risks and opportunities on climate change and water security. The CDP, formally the Carbon Disclosure Project, is a global environmental impact nonprofit that provides an annual environmental disclosure and scoring process, widely recognized as the gold standard of corporate environmental leadership.

We consistently engage with our partners and suppliers to identify and develop integrated strategies that incorporate efficiency, renewable electricity and meaningful cost-savings measures. Only by working together we can collectively drive a positive change and implement long-term solutions that can make the world a better place.

Our local efforts in Switzerland

Our employees also understand the importance of protecting the environment and natural resources, and this is reflected in how we operate our business and our facilities. Our environmental sustainability employee engagement program, WeSustain, mobilizes passionate employees to improve the environmental health of the places where we live, work and sell our products.
Also in our workplace, we have implemented different sustainability initiatives to further strengthen our commitment to the health of people and the planet. Amongst other initiatives, we are focusing on different aspects such as reduction of water consumption and waste disposal as well as reduction of CO2 emissions. We are also aware of the positive impacts of having LEED certified buildings – which we currently have three in Zug, Zuchwil and Allschwil.

Our commitment to sustainability is also something our customers are asking of us, be it in the Consumer Health, Medical Device or Pharmaceuticals sector. In collaboration with different partners and stakeholders in Switzerland, we can advance common goals while caring for patients and the planet together - which is exactly where our focus lies.

However, we do not only represent and promote sustainability externally. In our workplace we have implemented different initiatives to further strengthen our healthy planet. Amongst other initiatives we are focusing on different aspects such as reduction of water consumption and waste disposal as well as reduction of CO2 emissions. Green buildings are healthy for the environment and for those who work in them this is why our buildings for example in Zug, Zuchwil and Allschwil are LEED certified.

Thus, we are extremely excited to have a full pipeline also on a local ONE MD level, of promising projects contributing even to further to sustainability. We are thrilled to keep YOU updated in the weeks to come.
